Ihsan on the Tracks
Written by Mohamed Osman
My experience in Japan truly embodied the concept of Ihsan, which emphasizes excellence and mindfulness in every aspect of life, including commitment to order and the well-being of the public. Ihsan encourages doing things with intention, care, and balance. These values were evident even in the modern cities of Tokyo and Kyoto. The subway experience in Tokyo, in particular, stood out to me. The first thing that struck me was the silence, despite the crowds, passengers were quiet, respecting the shared space. People lined up neatly on designated spots while waiting for the train, and boarding was smooth and orderly. The trains themselves were spotless, with clear announcements and displays in multiple languages, making navigation effortless. During the ride, I noticed how commuters avoided phone calls and kept to themselves, reflecting a deep respect for others' comfort. Even during rush hour in Tokyo, when the trains were packed, there was a sense of calm and understanding. The entire experience showcased the Japanese commitment to harmony, punctuality, and consideration for others- an everyday example of Ihsan in action.
