The Warm Embrace of Japan
Written by Marwah Mahate
The kindness of Japan started before we even entered our first day of Caravan Tales. We were overwhelmed being in a new environment but our excitement was growing. We spotted the difference in clothing styles. The obvious language barrier was already setting in but we already had support and kind words from the locals. It started in the train station, where my friend and I, with what felt like the heaviest of suitcases, found ourselves struggling on the train. We were taking up seat space with our 50 lb check in bags but the locals were kind and understanding, we were told multiple times to enjoy our trip. Soon after our train ride my friend and I found ourselves staring at an endless staircase. We hadnt yet learned that every station is equipped with accessibility exits, and we were struggling to haul our bags up the steps. A man appeared, respectfully laughing at us. He helped us lift our suitcases up the stairs. It was a wonderful first hour in Japan that showed us how kind and respectful this country and its people are. The kindness of course didnt stop there. A few days later, on our bus ride around Mount Fuji, we made an unexpected discovery, halal fried chicken. I was not expecting a halal restaurant in this small village. The sweet couple running the stand, not only served us the most delicious chicken and sweet potato fries but also gifted us with Hello Kitty lunch boxes filled with red bean pancakes and chocolates all for free. I could hardly believe the generosity we received. Also something as small as providing halal chicken, opening the doors for Muslim tourists itself was so kind. By the time I left, my heart felt full. I still think back to the kind gestures we witnessed, from the countless Arigato gozaimasu we received to the constant bowing of gratitude. Japans culture of respect and generosity left a mark on me, and I can't wait to return to this beautiful country.
